Retired U.S.A.F Master Sergeant

and Special Investigator

TEWKSBURY -- William A. "Bill" Phalan, age 91, a resident of Tewksbury for over 50 years, passed away at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial V.A. Hospital in Bedford on Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

He was the beloved husband of Dorothea "Dot" (Reagan) Phalan, who passed away on May 22, 1999 and loving father of the late Christine M. Andrews, who passed away on May 21, 1997.

Born in Charlestown on June 28, 1922, he was the son of the late William P. Phalan and the late Louise (Doherty) (Phalan) Crovo.

Bill was raised in Revere, attended Revere schools and graduated from Revere High School in 1940.

He later attended Northeastern University, where he received his degree in Law Enforcement.

In 1941, he began his 20 year career in the U.S. Air Force. Bill served his country during World War II and the Korean War, and was stationed in Japan, France, Germany, England, Africa and Italy. He was awarded several decorations for his military service including the Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and the Good Conduct Medal with 1 Silver Lapel Pin.

In 1959, Bill moved to Tewksbury, where he was a communicant of Saint William's Parish and served the Parish community for over 45 years as lead tenor of the St. William's Church Choir.

He was a member of numerous civic, military and fraternal organizations including the Tewksbury V.F.W. Post #8164, the Tewksbury D.A.V. Post # 110, he was a member and first President of the Tewksbury Veterans Council , a member of the Fr. Francis Coppens Council , Knights of Columbus # 4336 of Tewksbury, a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, the Air Force Retired Officers of Special Investigations Association, a former member of the Tewksbury Industrial Commission, and in 1997 was the oldest graduate of the Tewksbury Civilian Police Academy.

In addition, Bill volunteered for 17 years in the Dept. of Social Services at Saints Medical Center in Lowell.

Bill is survived by one daughter, Colleen Phalan-Giles of Hubbardston; four grandchildren, Christopher Michael Andrews, William Phalan Andrews, Lawrence W. Giles, II, and Bridgitt L Giles; two great-grandchildren, Angel X. Andino and Taylor E. Giles; his beloved aunt, Agnes (Doherty) Morgan, age 101, who he spoke to weekly; first cousins, Denise (Morgan) Carney, Tony and Eileen Morgan, Michael and Claire Morgan; many second and third cousins; and his dearest neighbor and pal, Ronnie Haley, who was like his son, his wife, Halina and their daughter, Lauren.

PHALAN -- William A. Calling hours will be Thursday, Aug. 8, from 4-8 p.m. in the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral will be held on Friday, Aug. 9, at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. William's Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury.
