Mack Richards DORA, N.M.-Funeral services for Mack Richards, 88, a longtime resident of Roosevelt County, will be at 2 p.m. (MST) Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, just one day shy of his 89th birthday, at the Dora Church of Christ in Dora, N.M., with Doug Hale officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery near Dora with Michael Richards, Jason Richards, Kendall Richards, Alan Roberts, Terry Roberts and Sergio Maul serving as pallbearers. Lyndon Greathouse, Arthur Terry, Mickey Burkett, Monty Radcliff and Larry Blakey, along with all of his other many friends, will be honorary pallbearers. In 1924, the New Year's baby born in Wilson, Texas, was a boy named Robert Mack Richards. He was born to the home of Lee and Maude Richards. Mack moved with his family to Dora, N.M., in his early childhood, and graduated from Dora High School in 1942. Mack served a year in the Army during World War II as a medic. He farmed and ran cattle in the Dora community for many years, retiring in 1973. After retiring, he settled into a comfortable farm house located on a quarter of a section of the land he dearly loved. As his health began to fail, on Oct. 1, 2011, he moved to Lubbock, Texas, where he made his home at Grand Court Assisted Living. He was married to Elizabeth Miller. The couple had three children, Jeanette, Steven and Gene. He always remembered the time spent coaching Gene's Little League team. Mack was a longtime member of the Dora Church of Christ. He was a shy but friendly man who loved people and visiting with his family and friends. Mack enjoyed spending time playing dominos at the Dora Senior Citizens. Mack is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Nita Richards of Dora, N.M.; a daughter, Jeanette Richards of Lubbock, Texas; three grandsons, Michael Richards of Portales, Jason Richards of San Angelo, Texas, and Kendall Richards of Midland, Texas; two brothers, Paul (Bernice) Richards and Lee Richards Jr., both of Carlsbad; a sister, Rosemary Shackleford of Lubbock, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Maude Richards; a brother, Lynn Richards; three sisters, Marie Richards, Averil Burkett and Pansy Evans; a son, Steven who died in 2010; and by Elizabeth, his wife of more than 42 years, who died September 7, 1993. Arrangements by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, Inc., 505-356-4455, wheelermortuary.net.
