Robert was born March 26, 1937, in Beaumont, Texas, to LeGrande Mancel and Pearl Agnes (Spillmann) Slaughter. Robert married Luanne Pillsbury Dawson, his wife of 42 years, on July 10, 1971. After graduating from high school in Houston, Texas, Robert received his B.A. in German and English from the University of Texas in Austin in 1962.
