Virginia Jean Owen LUBBOCK-Virginia Jean Owen was born April 2, 1928, in Sweetwater, Texas. She passed away July 7, 2014. Her parents were George McGrath and Elizabeth Louise Harrell. Following her father's untimely death in a farming accident, her mother remarried to Horace Leland Hightower. She was raised by this couple in South Texas. She lived in Bishop, Odem, Corpus Christi, and Sinton. She attended Baylor University and Texas A&I. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Robert Owen, in 1947, Virginia postponed the completion of her college work. She and her husband, a veterinarian, raised three sons in Schulenburg, Texas. After the youngest son entered school, Virginia resumed her college studies and graduated with a degree in Home Economics from Southwest Texas State University. Later she earned a Master's Degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. For several years she was the Home Demonstration Agent in Fayette County. She taught school for many years and then worked for the Texas Education Agency. During her married life Virginia lived in Schulenburg, Center, Lubbock, and Boerne, all in Texas. She was devoted to her family and was an active member of the Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Herbert Hightower; and is survived by a brother, Gary Hightower; her three sons, Robert, Larry, and Rick; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Vaughan's Funeral Home. Graveside services will be on Friday, July 11, at 11 a.m. in the Restland Memorial Park in Bishop, Texas.
