Walter O. Sonny Heinrich SLATON-A rosary for Walter Heinrich, 85, of Slaton will be 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at Englunds lead by Mark Meurer. Celebration of life mass will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, in Slaton's St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Joe James officiating. Burial will follow in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. Walter was born on the family farm near Slaton on Dec. 12, 1928. He passed from this life surrounded by his family Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014. He was a life long resident of Slaton. Walter attended St. Joseph Parochial School and Southland ISD. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a life member of the Slaton VFW. Walter married Lillian Wimmer on April 22, 1954, in Lubbock. They continued the family tradition of being a farming family. Walter served on the Slaton Coop Gin board from 1971 to 1983 and as president from 1975 to 1978. He was recognized as Slaton's Farmer of the Year in 1966. After his retirement, Walter and Lillian enjoyed traveling across this country and were members of the Hitchhiker Travel Club. He was a lifelong member of Slaton's St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving on many parish boards and committees, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Walter's sister, Lydia Buxkemper, preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 2013.His survivors include his wife, Lillian of Slaton; sons, Russell Heinrich and wife Misty, and Kelly Heinrich and wife Susan, all of Lubbock, daughters, Phyllis Bechner and husband Eric of Midland, and Michelle Haney and husband Douglas of Anthem, AZ; brothers, Franklin Heinrich and wife Josetta of Slaton, and Royce Heinrich and Nancy of Lubbock; sisters, Valeria Wimmer of Slaton and Sister Angelita Heinrich RSM, Sister Cleo Heinrich RSM, both of St. Louis, MO; along with eight grandchildren.
