Wilton J. Jim Payne TAHOKA- Wilton Jim Payne of Tahoka passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013 at the age of 87. He was born May 23, 1926 in Lynn County, Texas to Elvin D. and Sarah Jane (Cambell) Payne. He attended grade school in Edith and graduated from Tahoka High School in 1942. He farmed with his dad until he entered the U.S. Army in October 1944. He trained at Camp Walters, Texas and served in France and Germany until late 1946. After returning from the service he worked at the Gaignat Hardware & Furniture store for a few months before he started work on Feb. 1, 1947 at Lyntegar Electric Cooperative. In 1973 he became General Manager and he retired Jan. 1, 2010 after serving 63 years as a trusted employee and family member of the Co-Op. In December 1947 he married Dixie Shepherd. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Tahoka. Jim was president of Texas Electric Cooperatives and for many years served on the Insurance and Employee Welfare Committee of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and served on the Tahoka School Board for two terms, he was also a member and president of Rotary Club of Tahoka. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dixie; daughter, Paula Stegemoeller and Clayton; son, Kent Payne and Donna; grandchildren, Stephanie Dudensing (Matt), Michelle Johnston, Ashley Mason (Cody), Hunter Payne (Krisa); great-grandchildren, Corbin, Carter and Anson Dudensing, Emma Johnston, and Thomas Payne. Visitation will start at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013 in Combest Family Memorial Chapel with family will receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church of Tahoka.
