James A. Dunn LUBBOCK-James A. Dunn, 77, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on March 16, 2013. James was born on Sept. 11, 1936, to the union of Cleo Berry and Cornelius Dunn in Henderson, Texas. At an early age he became a member of Jenkins Memorial C.M.E. Church. He received his formal education at Henderson Colored High School and obtained his B.A. in social science from Butler College in Tyler, Texas. James served his country in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge following his years of service. James married Marva Lane Turner on Aug. 2, 1969. To this union two children were born, Cynthia Regina and Brian Anthony. Upon moving to Dallas, Texas, he joined New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where he was also baptized. James served many years as a deacon, trustee and director of the youth department. He was a very active member of the church and loved Sunday school. Prior to his declining health, you could always find James working in his yard. Caring for his large elephant-ear plants and maintaining the look of his property were his pride and joy. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Tommy Ray Shepherd. James leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Marva Dunn; daughter, Regina Culver (Rev. Hiawatha Culver Jr.); son, Brian Dunn (Kimberley); nephew, Thomas Paul Shepherd (Lakeesa); aunt, Grethel Moss; cousin, Thomas Henry Ward (Peace); grandchildren, Hiawatha (Trey) Culver III, Jeremiah Jamar JJ Culver, Jarrett Ryan Culver, Ava Regina Dunn and Sydney Michelle Dunn; one godson, Dan Pride (Vaneeka); three goddaughters, Nikki Pride Young, Danielle Pride Hightower and LaDacher Jackson; and a host of other relatives and friends. Celebration of life services will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Rising Star Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Peaceful Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Griffin Mortuary.
