Funeral services for Mr. Bernard James Austin, Sr., 92, of Lufkin, will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Long Chapel C.M.E. Church. Pastor Robert Gipson, Rev. Bettie Kennedy, Rev. Vernon Austin and Rev. Sarah Brooks will officiate. Burial follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday afternoon until 8 p.m. in the Tims Funeral Home Chapel and from 10 a.m. Saturday until service time in the Church. Mr. Austin was born Nov. 11, 1920 in Keatchie, Louisiana to the late Leonard Austin & Amanda (McCann) Austin. He moved to Lufkin at an early age and attended Dunbar High School. He united with Long Chapel C.M.E. Church and served faithfully as a Steward until death. He was married to Doris Patricia (Robinson) Austin for 67 blessed years. Two sons Bernard Austin Jr. & James Austin Sr. and a brother Leonard Austin Jr. preceded him in death. He obtained the rank of Corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II. After 40 years of employment, he retired from Texas Foundries in 1982 and performed several duties at his church. On Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 he departed this life at 5:10 a.m. in his residence of 67 years following illness. Survivors: wife; Doris of Lufkin; son & daughter-in-law Charles (Willette) Austin of Lufkin; son Andre Booker of Houston; daughter Sheila Booker of Lufkin; daughter-in-law Creola Austin of Lufkin; grandchildren James Austin Jr., Millisa Austin, LaTonya Austin, Ruben Austin, Cerey Austin, Jamari Austin, Akelia Austin, Demetria Austin & Chris Miller; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; nieces Frances Jones of Weslaco, Bernice Jackson of Dallas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
