Services for Vernon Harper, 100, of Lufkin, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, Lufkin. Interment will follow at 10 a.m. Monday, March 17 at Houston National Cemetery, 104 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston. Mr. Harper was born Feb. 1, 1914 in Broaddus to Cleveland and Charlcie Harper, the second of six children, and died March 8, 2014. Vernon received his education in Broaddus. In 1943 he met and married Mattie Odell (Madison) on Oct. 16, 1943. He served in the US Army Oct. 21, 1943 to Dec. 26, 1945. To this union are eight children: Ruby Lee (James-deceased) LeBlue, Nuevo, Calif.; Edna Jean Robinson, Dallas; Jerone D. Harper, Lufkin; Verryn V. Harper, Long Beach, Calif.; James Ernest Harper and Alfreda O'Lean Harper; Madalyn V. Barrett, Spring; and Peggy Harris. Vernon was a devoted husband and father. Vernon joined Warren Temple True Light Holiness Church and became a member in good standing. He was employed at Southland Paper Mill and retired February 1, 1979. Preceded in death is his father and mother, (wife) Mattie, (brother) Johnnie, (son) James Ernest, (daughters) Alfreda O'Lean and Peggy, (sisters) Annie Ruth Sowell and Bernice Gibson, (grandsons) Kenny and Vincent LeBlue. Leaves to cherish, sister, Maxine Duffield; brother, Ernest Harper, Lufkin; children, Ruby Le'Blue (Nuevo, Cali.), Edna Robinson (Dallas), Verryn Harper (Long Beach, Calif.), Jerone Harper, Lufkin, and Madalyn Barrett (Michael) Spring; a host of grand and great-grands, nieces, nephews and life long friends.
