Donald R. Mackenzie
Donald R. Mackenzie, 73, passed away on February 26, 2014 at home in Kutztown, PA, surrounded by family, after a long battle with cancer. Don was born in Somerville, NJ, the son of the late Carrie Billie (Reeve) Mackenzie and Neil Mackenzie. He grew up in Bound Brook, NJ and graduated from Bound Brook High School. He attended the University of Rochester and Newark College of Engineering (now New Jersey Institute of Technology). Don and wife Mary Jane celebrated 22 years of marriage in May, 2013. A proud American patriot, he served six years in the Navy, first on the a destroyer escort, the USS McCaffery, then the USS Essex, as an Electronics Technician, visiting 26 countries. When his own service was complete he supported many military veterans groups including the Wounded Warriors Organization, Help Hospital Veterans, Blinded Veterans Association, Disabled Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. After his Navy service, he began a 26-year career with Bell Labs as a research engineer in fiber optics. He held many patents. In retirement, he owned and operated the Chestnut Shop, selling the woodworking and leather work products he loved to create in his very unique style. His crafts often showed his love of the Native American culture. Don was a patron member of the NRA and a Certified Instructor. He belonged to the Toptonand Ontelonee Fishing and Game Clubs. He competed in over 100 Scottish Games and numerous powerlifting meets setting many records in each. He had a lifelong love of nature, the out of doors and the ocean. He enjoyed camping, gardening, fishing, boatbuilding, sailing and hunting. He was a proud member of the United States Power Squadron, emphasizing and teaching boating safety. He and his wife traveled extensively in their RV. Survivors: He is survived by wife, Mary Jane, son Allan (Richard Kucera) of Green Valley, AZ, son Neil of Tucson, AZ, daughter Mary of Flemington, NJ, stepson James W. Kelley of Bethlehem, PA, proteges Scott Peterson and his daughter Hannah Peterson of Gainesville, FL, also sisters Ellen Merk (Ben Paskus) of Pittsburgh, PA, Ann Malokas (Jack) of California, Judy Frank (Joe) of Belmar, NJ as well as beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. In the midst of his suffering, he said: So many people have given me snatches of a good life that even today I can think of them and smile. Services: Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the James Funeral Home, 527 Center Street, Bethlehem; where relatives and friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will take place on Monday, March 10, in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, Bucks County.
