Richard J. Hope, 85 of Allentown, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Twp. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Sweeney) Hope daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Sweeney of Tamaqua. He was the son of the late Richard and Claire (Bonner) Hope of Tamaqua. They were married in 1956 at St. Jeromes Church of Tamaqua. He graduated from Perkiomen Prep and Penn State University. Hope served in the U.S. Navy 1950 to 1954 in the Legal Dept. in Norfolk, VA and also in the Legal Dept. on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. Upon discharge he worked in the family business in Tamaqua. In 1958 he re-opened the Allentown Business School and served as owner and Director. Hope sold the school in 1968 to ICS of Scranton. He then joined Air Products & Chemicals in Trexlertown where he worked as a Personnel Supervisor for 22 years. Upon retiring in 1990 he worked as a volunteer at LVHS for 10 years. Hope also worked part-time for Lutron Electronics in Center Valley for several years in the Personnel Dept. Survivors: daughter, Jane McDonnell of Blue Bell, PA; sister, Elizabeth Johnson of Ocean City, NJ; brother, Roger Hope of Palm Springs, CA; Granddaughter, Hope McDonnell. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara and son-in-law David McDonnell. Services: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, in the Cathedral Church of St. Catharine of Siena 18th & Turner Sts. Allentown is preceded by a visitation from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday in Robert C. Weir Funeral Home, 18th & Turner Sts., Allentown. Interment follows Mass in St. Jeromes Cemetery, Tamaqua PA.
