Vivian H. Yoder Obituary
Yoder, Vivian H.Vivian H. Yoder, 90, of Allentown, PA, died May 3, 2014, in Phoebe Home. Married to Rev. George H. Yoder for 66 years, she was born in Telford, PA, to the late Raymond and Emma (Freed) Hedrick. She taught high school English, wrote poetry and fiction, served as church organist and choir director, and was a peace activist. Her students at Pennridge and Emmaus High will remember her as one of the most passionate teachers they ever had. Her family and friends appreciate her vitality, humor, compassion, and childlike energy and joy. Vivian was active in the Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group and a leader in Action for Nuclear Disarmament (A.N.D.), Interfaith Peace Resource Center of Lehigh Valley, and LEPOCO Peace Camp for Children. She served Penn NE Conference of the UCC for 6 years as delegate to the PA Council of Churches Legislative Action Committee, and also served 4 years on the PNEC In-Care Committee. While her roots in the local community ran deep, she also loved to travel. She and George made trips to Europe, Greece, Russia, and Iceland. She also "traveled" through the books she read and subjects she studied, such as the college genetics courses that she took when she was in her seventies, simply because she found science fascinating. Vivian had a lifelong passion for music, especially classical and jazz. She was a wonderful cook and provider of fun and sustenance. She once mounted an unbroken stallion and, although she was seventy-something and a novice rider, she cheerfully extended her arm in the air, as if she'd been riding bareback her whole life.
