William G. Garris
William G. Garris, 79, of Allentown and formerly of Orefield, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Tuesday, January 29, 2013. He had been a resident of Phoebe Home, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Ardythe L. (Schlenker) Garris. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Mildred A. (Dorward) and Norman Garris, Sr. William was a graduate of Allentown H.S., and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as a welder at Air Products for over 30 years before retiring in 1986. After retiring, William worked for Lindsay Soft Water of Allentown for six years. He was a starter and ranger at Butter Valley Golf Course in Bally for 20 years. Mr. Garris was a member and former deacon of Emmanuel U.C.C., Allentown. He was also the church sexton for 15 years, during which time the church won many Properties of Merit awards. Mr. Garris was an avid bowler, bowling in the Thursday night church league, and golfer, and once had a hole-in-one. He was a three-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball, and baseball. William helped to start the South Allentown Optimist Youth League (Alton Park). He was a volunteer with the Ecumenical Food Bank and the Allentown Soup Kitchen. Survivors: Companion, Shirley C. Wanish of Allentown; children, Linda L. Watkins and her husband, Robert L., of Slatington, Michael W. Garris, Sr. and his wife, Angela M., of Orefield, Kathleen M. Kerstetter and her husband, Wayne R., of Camp Hill; grandchildren, 14; great-grandchildren, 17. William was predeceased by his brother, Norman Garris, Jr. Services: 10:30 a.m., Friday, Stephens Funeral Home, Inc., 1335-37 Linden St., Allentown.
