Josephine (Josie) Chavez Gutierrez, 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 6, 2012 in Midland. She was born on September 18, 1925 in Lake Arthur, N.M. to Juan Chavez and Concepcion Franco; moving to Midland at a very young age. It was in Midland that she met and later married S.R. (Jack) Gutierrez which lasted for 60 years. While Jack was in the Army during WWII, she waited for him and later joining him in Alabama. During this union, five children were raised and educated in Midland. Josephine was a strong willed person, beating cancer twice, first with breast cancer and a few years later with pancreatic and liver cancer. There are many people that we would like to thank for being there for our mom. For many years, Dr. Gregory Bartha was in our mom's life, first being his family's housekeeper for 20 years and as our mom liked to remember and tell us that she used to walk Gregory to school when he was young. She always liked to consider herself Gregory's "second mama", later as her doctor. For the holidays she liked to make tamales, and she would call Dr. Bartha to come get his plate of tamales and beans. Our very special Thank You to him, for always calling her back when she called. A very special friend of the family and always considered as our sister, a special thank you to Rosalinda Munoz, who was always very close to our mom. Many times Linda was there when we couldn't be. She saw mom thru all of her cancers and was there to help with all of them. Thanks Linda. A very special thank you to Mr. Bill Bufford, for always being there when mom had any legal questions; The ladies from Guadalupe; Sra. Inez Laing for taking mom on her doctor's appointments; Sra. Armandina Perales for taking mom her communion on Sundays when she could no longer attend mass; Dora Howard for all of her concern when mom wasn't feeling well, Thank-you Ladies.
