Anne Elizabeth Hill Hamby

Cochran, GA- Anne Elizabeth Hill Hamby, age 87, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, in the Bryant Health and Rehab Center in Cochran. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 19, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Mathis Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pulaski-Bleckley Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Hamby, born March 7, 1926, in Pontotoc, MS, was the daughter of the late John Guy and Annie Calloway Hill and was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Jesse L. Hamby. She graduated from Pontotoc High School and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and also attended Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro (now Georgia Southern University). She later earned a master's degree in early elementary education form Georgia College in Milledgeville. Mrs. Hamby taught English for a short while at Wood Junior College in Mathiston, MS. She contributed to the war effort in World War II by working as a civilian in supply at the Ferrying Command of the Army-Air Force Base in Memphis, TN. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as an educator and businesswoman. Mrs. Hamby educated many Bleckley County children at her own school, Joyland Kindergarten, for over 15 years. She also owned and operated several businesses, including a Fabric Shop and a Flower Shop.
Survivors are her daughter, Jessalyn H. Mullis of Dublin; her son, David Hamby of Auburn, AL; grandchildren, Nathan Mullis and Emily Mullis of Dublin.
The family is at 310 Holly Dr., Dublin and will greet friends after the service Friday at Mathis Funeral Home. www.mathisfh.net
