Helon Lewis Chichester
Reno, NV- Helon Chichester, "Budge", passed away peacefully on November 27, 2013. Budge was a native of Macon, Georgia, born on Octotober 29, 1929. Attended Sidney Lanier High School and the University of Georgia at Athens, GA. Married Cherie Poe, also of Macon, GA in 1950. Graduated from college in 1951 with a degree in Pharmacy and a commission as a Reserve Officer in the Army. Served active duty training with the 82nd Airborne Division, and returned to Macon to manage Chichester's College Hill Pharmacy.
Changing careers, moved to Berkeley, CA with his family, and attended the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, obtaining a B.D. degree and ordination as an Episcopal priest. Came back to Georgia and ministered as the vicar of St. James, Cedartown, GA for three years.
He returned to California, taught as an instructor at the Church Divinity School and San Francisco State University, while studying at U.C. Berkeley. Received a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Education from U.C. Berkeley. Taught for twenty five years a variety of academic subjects at the College of Alameda, and served as chairman of the social sciences department.
Retired and relocated to his vacation home in Lake Tahoe, CA with his second wife, Sara Hague in 2009. In retirement, Budge continued to enjoy reading, collecting books, sailing, and traveling. He is survived by his wife, four children and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, Episcopal, Macon, GA on Tuesday, March 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM.
