Herman Edward Gassett, Sr.
Fort Valley , GA- Herman Edward Gassett Sr., 80, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014 after an extended illness. Services will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at GracePointe Church, 570 Woolfolk Road in Fort Valley, with visitation beginning at 10:00AM and funeral service with military honors at 11:00AM. Rev. Paul Chapman will officiate. Burial will be private.
Born in Crawford County to the late Herman Glenmore Gassett and Mamie Lee Walton Gassett, Mr. Gassett served his country in the Marines during the Korean War and earned the rank of sergeant, retired from Blue Bird Body Company after 45 years of service, and attended Evangelistic House of Prayer. He loved the outdoors and his passions were farming, working in his yard and garden and his grandchildren. He will always be remembered by family and friends as kind, generous, and hard working.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Giles Gassett; their daughter, Sandra Gassett (Sandy Bond) of Fort Valley; granddaughters, Lana Christina Gassett and Amber Crystal Gassett, both of Fort Valley; brothers and sisters, Ruth Giles (Leonard) of Fort Valley, J. Leroy Gassett of Fort Valley, Christine Robertson of Fort Valley, Betty Dixon of Fort Valley, Gladys Pennington (Phil) of Tennessee, Carol Taylor (Mitchell) of Perry, Tiny Absher (Frank) of Fort Valley, Mike Gassett of Fort Valley, and Judy Layfield of Warner Robins; aunt, Elizabeth McGrotha of Warner Robins; uncle and sister-in-law, Marcus and Sara Gassett of Fort Valley; sister-in-law, Rosie Wynn (William) of Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Dawn Leslie (Coleman) of Fort Valley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends. He is preceded in death by a son, Herman Edward "Eddie" Gassett, Jr.; daughter, Elizabeth Gassett; and siblings, Leon Gassett, Velma Jean Gassett, Thelma Jean Gassett, and James L. Gassett; and brother-in-law, Donald Dixon.
