Ellijay, Ga.- Lt. Col. John Richard (Dick) Neves, Jr. USAF (RET), 96, of Byron, GA, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013. Col. Neves was born in Ft. Gaines, GA, Clay County, June 21, 1917. He was the eldest child of, and predeceased by, parents John Richard Neves, Sr. and Edna Rish Neves, wife Nell Emile Jordan Neves, longtime companion Rose Coleman, and his four siblings.
Col. Neves graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1939, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After graduation he became a lifelong member of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association and purchaser of season tickets for the Yellow Jackets Football Team (even after he decided that the best seats were in front of his home television set).
Col. Neves was a World II Air Force Veteran who served in the Southwest Pacific Theatre. As a result of his military and civilian government service, he was a recipient of the following awards: Armed Forces Reserve Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Air Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
As a former member of St. James' Episcopal Church, Macon, GA, Col. Neves served on the Vestry and as Treasurer.
Col. Neves is survived by his son, John Richard Neves, III, of Panama City, FL, daughter and son-in-law, Mercedes Jordan Neves and Thomas Richard Misinco, of Ellijay, GA, and grandsons and their families: James Marcus and Vanessa Neves, children, Anastazia Eaton Neves and Stone Mercer Neves, Austin, TX ; Thomas Richard, Jr. and Pepper Misinco, and children, Jordan Taylor Misinco and Morgan Riley Misinco, Kennesaw, GA; and John Robert and Amanda Misinco, Mesa, AZ. He is also survived by his large extended family including the descendants of his siblings, and the descendants of Rose Coleman.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the Building Fund, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Blue Ridge, GA, or United Hospice Foundation, Norcross, GA.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 29, 2013, from 5 to7 pm, at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory, 701 Carl Vinson Parkway, Warner Robins, GA 31093; graveside services with full military honors are scheduled for Wednesday, October 30, 2013, 11:30 am, New Park Cemetery, Ft. Gaines, GA.
