Sidney Cheatham, Sr.
April 17, 1918 - July 13, 2013
Barnesville, GA- Mr. Sidney Franklin Cheatham, Sr., age 95, of 888 Thomaston Street, Barnesville, Georgia died Saturday, July 13, 2013, in Washington County Regional Medical Center Extended Care Facility. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church of Barnesville. Reverend Dana Overton-Garrett and Mr. Walter Geiger officiated with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville. Pallbearers were Reid Cheatham, Scott Meckes, Paul Densmore, Ty Thomas, Britt Lifsey, Randy Long, Tim Dix and Lester Lifsey.
Mr. Cheatham was born on April 17, 1918 in Macon, Georgia, the son of the late Rufus Sidney Cheatham and the late Grace Tyner Cheatham. He was a graduate of Lanier High School in Macon and Gordon Military College. Mr. Cheatham retired as a salesman with B. F. Goodrich Tire Company in 1979. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Barnesville and served on the Board of Trustees. He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Barnesville and was Chairman of the Board for the Lamar County Library for over 30 years. Mr. Cheatham was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Department of Family and Children Services for Lamar County and served on that Board for over 30 years. He was a charter member of the Deer Trail Country Club and an active community servant in Lamar County. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. Sid was a man of many talents. He was an outstanding football player in both high school and college. He loved golf, fishing, poetry, gardening, and was an accomplished portrait artist. He was a true Southern gentleman.
Survivors include his beloved wife of seventy two years, Bessie Elaine Lifsey Cheatham of Barnesville; his brother, Ralph Tyner Cheatham and his wife Sis of Vero Beach, Florida; a son, Sidney F. Cheatham, Jr. and his wife Peggie of Sandersville; a daughter, Bettilaine Cheatham Wolfe and her husband Tom of Wake Forest, NC; five grandchildren, Lauren Densmore, Amy Thomas, Jessica Meckes, Erin Anderson, and Reid Cheatham; 13 great- grandchildren, Christian Densmore, Hayden Densmore, Grace Densmore, Taylor Meckes, Jackson Meckes, Macon Thomas, Molly Grace Thomas, Sydney Anderson, Leila Anderson, Margaret Scott Anderson, Thomas Cheatham, Walker Cheatham, and John Carlisle Cheatham.
The family suggests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Barnesville, 375 Thomaston Street, Barnesville, Georgia 30204 or the Lamar County Library, 401 Thomaston Street, Barnesville, Georgia 30204.
May and Smith Funeral Directors of Sandersville and Williams Funeral Home in Barnesville were charge of the arrangements.
