Dr. William "Doc" Douglas Lyles
CHULA, GA- Dr. William "Doc" Douglas Lyles, 70, of Chula, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, February 15, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at Northside Baptist Church in Tifton with the Rev. Steve Lyles and Dr. Fred Evers officiating. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors.
Robert "Elmer" Nisen, Chris Strickland, Dr. Roger Barlow, James Calhoun "Buddy" Petty, Jr., Dr. Jason McGovern, and Bert Barry will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Matt Lyles, Will Lyles, Dalton Lyles, Cal Petty, Brad Petty, J. C. Petty, Ben Petty, Reed Petty, Dr. Lyles' office staff, Johnny Crawford's Sunday School Class of Northside Baptist Church, and retired and active Tiftarea dentists.
Born in Franklin, Va., on February 28, 1942, he moved to Macon in 1947 and graduated from A. R. Willingham High School in 1960. He went on to attend the University of Georgia. He graduated from the University of Tennessee, School of Dentistry in 1967. Dr. Lyles served our nation as a member of the 36th Medical Detachment in Vietnam and was a member of a select, elite group of Dental Externs trained at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital. He attained the rank of Captain and received the Army Commendation Medal in Vietnam for May 1969-1970.
Dr. Lyles was President of the Tifton Kiwanis Club in 1975-1976 and won the Conservationist of the Year for Irwin County in 2012. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Tifton as well as the American Dental Association and the Tifton Elks Lodge. Dr. Lyles enjoyed hunting and fishing and holds the record for killing the biggest deer (10-point buck) in Irwin County. He also played church softball in his earlier years.
Dr. Lyles was preceded in death by his father, Kemp Battle Lyles, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Sherry Ann Stackhouse Lyles of Chula; his mother, Claudia Adams Ward Lyles of Macon; and his sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and James Calhoun "Buddy" Petty, Jr., of Macon. He is the father of three children, his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Claudia Lyles of Tyler, Texas, and Mark and Dawn Lyles of Ocilla, and his daughter, Lori Lyles of Chula; four grandchildren, Matt Lyles and Will Lyles of Tyler, Texas and Dalton Lyles and Megan Lyles of Ocilla; and his longtime dog friend, "Buddy."
