FAIRFIELD - Coleman Perry Sherman Fate, 60, of Fairfield, passed on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, with his wife and two sons by his side and family and friends close by to provide comfort and support.
Born in Glennville, Ga., Coleman was the third child and second son of Calvin and Cora Mae (Bethea) Fate. He attended schools in Georgia, Texas and California. In his early working years he spent his time as a merchant seaman. When he returned home to Monterey, Calif., he helped care for nephews Timmy and Tyril and his niece, Tina.
Joining the U.S. Army in July 1979 as an infantryman, Fate completed his basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Ga. His first duty assignment took him to New Ulm, Germany, where he was able to extensively tour the country and enjoy the German culture. He was reassigned to Fort Campbell, Ky. It was there in April 1983 that he met his best friend and life partner, Michelle Marie Perry. After a short courtship Fate informed Michelle that they were going to be married and spend the rest of their lives together - and so it was. They married on June 24, 1983. Fate was discharged from the military in July 1983 while Michelle remained on active duty.
In April 1984, they welcomed their first son, John Calvin. On military orders they traveled to Hanau, Germany. While in Germany, Fate's prior travels throughout the country allowed them to explore the country more as locals than as tourists.
Returning to the United States in 1988, they went to Omaha, Neb. In May 1989, the family became complete, and John was now a big brother to Winston Cory. After leaving Nebraska they were reassigned to Honolulu, Hawaii. As a "Mr. Mom," Fate was the best, guiding and teaching his sons constantly. He selflessly gave of himself to support the goals of his family. Relocated to El Paso, Texas, in 1994, they finally settled in Fairfield, Maine, in 1997. He was the foundation of the family unit. Without complaint, he suffered in silence from various medical problems for years, yet he remained a pillar of strength. His granddaughter, Leah Marie, was the apple of his eye and he thoroughly enjoyed being "G-dad."
Fate was predeceased by his infant brother, Craig Sherman, in 1959; his brother John Calvin, who died in Vietnam in May 1970, his father, Calvin Fate, of Glennville, Ga., who passed in November 2003; and his stepfather, William T. Sherman Sr., who passed in February 2006.
He is survived by his wife, Michelle; his son, John, and his wife, Natusha, and their daughter, Leah, of Waterville, and son Winston, of Fairfield; his mother, Cora Sherman, of Maricopa, Ariz.; his sisters, Carolyn Fate-Sherman, of Sacramento, Calif., Rose Marie Houston, of Maricopa, Ariz., Sandra Glasco-Guiterrez and her husband, Alfred, of Sacramento, Calif., Ledina Fate and her husband, Spade, of Glennville, Ga., Earlinda Fate, of Glennville, Ga.; and his brothers, Frank Dennis Fate, of Haywood, Calif., Col. Freddie Joseph Fate-Sherman, of Williamsburg, Va., William Tyrone Sherman and his wife, Cheryl, of Maricopa, Ariz., and Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) Lefford Lemar Fate and his wife, Jody, of Sumter, S.C.; his brother-in-law, John Patrick Perry, and his wife, Teresa, of Smithfield; sisters-in-law, Maureen Ann Briggs and her husband, Thomas, of Winslow, and Melissa Joan Adams and her husband, Jonathan, of Windsor. Fate leaves behind a host of great-aunts and great-uncles, many aunts and uncles and several cousins. He cherished the time he spent with his nieces and nephews, including Matthew and Joshua Perry, Michael and Cory Briggs, Jazmine Adams, and numerous nieces and nephews spread throughout the country.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Fate's extraordinary life will be held at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
