ONTARIO: Betty L. Meek, age 92, of Ontario passed away Thursday, January 24, 2013 in Lexington Court Care Center following a long illness.
She was born October 31, 1920 in Fostoria, the daughter of Elmer and Mabel (Rigby) Harris and was graduated from Fostoria High School in 1939. Betty also attended North Central State College and The Ohio State University.
On July 5, 1942 she married James C. Meek who preceded her in death on March 18, 2011.
Betty served as the Police Matron for the City of Fostoria, a total of 19 years before her retirement in 1974, respectful and empathetic to the inmates, she was also tough and easily earned their respect. A business woman, Betty worked as a proof reader at Gray Printing, and also ran a catalog sales office.
Betty and James moved to Richland County in 1974 and were active members of Perrysville Presbyterian Church.
She enjoyed oil painting working mostly in still life and landscapes, wood carving and crafts. She enjoyed politics and keeping up with current world events, her tv channel was frequently set on CNN. Betty was also a talented cook.
Strong and supportive, Betty was the backbone of her family. Blessed with a sense of humor, Betty was also smart and talented in many areas. She will be remembered as the unsung hero of her family, ladylike yet feisty and willing to do anything for them.
She is survived by a son Michael Meek of Lakeville; a daughter and son-in-law Michelle and James Grandstaff of Donna, Texas; four grandchildren Mark, Amy, Joshua and Troy; five great grandchildren Kenneth, Jennifer, Madison, Auston and Lilly; a brother Roger Harris of Roseville, Michigan, and a sister-in-law Virginia Meek of Florida.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Warren Harris and a sister Elsie Jordan.
The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral is honored to serve the Meek family with compassionate cremation services. A memorial service is planned for a later date at Perrysville Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be held in Fountain Cemetery in Fostoria.
