Charles Richard "Chuck" Phillips

SHELBY: Charles Richard "Chuck" Phillips, age 85, of Shelby, died Monday, September 1, 2014 at his home.

He was born August 6, 1929 in Mansfield, the son of the late Albert L. and Germaine R. (Lambermont) Phillips. Chuck was a 1947 graduate of Shelby High School and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War serving in Florida and Turkey. Chuck's working career was in computer programming having worked at Wilkins Air Force Depot, Mansfield Telephone Company, AMF, Lumbermen's Mutual Insurance, First National Bank in Mansfield and North Central Technical College - from which he retired in 1995 as the director of the IT department.

He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he had been an altar server, lay distributor, usher and a member of the St. Mary's School Board. Chuck was also a member of Shelby American Legion, Catholic War Veterans, Shelby Knights of Columbus, and Mansfield Liederkranz.

Chuck enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. He was a very good cook as he especially liked cooking Sunday dinner and making cookies. Traveling was another source of enjoyment. No matter where he went - driving around the area country side or around Europe when he was in the service - he liked it all. However, his greatest joy was his family. He cherished the times he spent with his girls and their families.

He is survived by his 5 daughters: Susan (Dale) Black of Toledo, Karen (Jack) Brumenschenkel of Shelby, Sally Phillips of Shelby, Kelly (Dan) Wurm of Mansfield, and Mary (Marc) Rodriguez of Shelby; 3 granddaughters: Emily Wurm, Rachel Brumenschenkel, and Morgan Brumenschenkel; 2 step grandsons and 2 step great grandsons; 2 sisters-in-law: Irma (Vince) Studer of Shelby and Helen Kempf of Fairborn; several nieces and nephews. On February 23, 1957 he married Beda M. Kempf and she preceded him in death in 2011; also preceding him were: his parents; 2 brothers: John Phillips and James Phillips; 4 sisters: Thelma Fulmer, Gertrude Greenwood, Viola Wenzlick and Frances C. Phillips.

Friends and family are welcome on Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where a wake service will be held at 7:45 PM.
