MANSFIELD: Clay R. Mentzer, age 77, passed away late Sunday evening, November 25, 2012 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. Born November 21, 1935 in Ontario, he was the son of the late John Glade and Jeanette (Cook) Mentzer. Clay graduated from Springfield Local School in 1953 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in November 1958. He retired from the City of Ontario after 10 years as Maintenance Supervisor and had worked in construction for 30 years prior to that. On August 24, 1957, he married Dorothy Nussbaum, whom he had known since 3rd grade. He and his wife have a condo at Lake Erie where they enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Clay was an active resident of Ontario serving on the Ontario Planning Commission for several years and was involved in the Lion's Club, manning the hot dog trailer most often located at Lowe's. He was a volunteer fireman for the Springfield Township Fire Department and is now considered a life member.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy (Nussbaum) Mentzer; sister, Vivian (Paul) Gages; special niece, Vickie (Greg) Dalton and their son, Rhett; special nephew, Trent (Cindy) Gages; nieces and nephews, Rosemarie (Rick) Grondalski, Cheryl (Ron) Keller, Jim (Julie) Mentzer and John Mentzer; and a sister-in-law, Maria Mentzer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John "Jack" Mentzer and nephew, Grant Gages.
Friends and family may visit from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. Lions Club Services will follow the visitation. The memorial service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Carol Kilgore officiating. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ontario Lions Club.
