MANSFIELD: Darryl R. Sargent, age 64, died Thursday afternoon, December 27, 2012 at Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital in Westerville. Darryl was born February 12, 1948 in Mansfield to Kenneth and Mildred (Richards) Sargent. He retired from General Motors in 2003 after 34 years as a welder maintenance repairman. Darryl was an avid hunter of coon, deer and squirrel and also loved to fish. He enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors and his favorite saying was, "Look what God has made". He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Vietnam War. Darryl was a life member of White Tails Unlimited, member of the Northern Ohio Covered Bridge Society, life member of V.F.W. Post #2920 in Crestline, and life member and Past Post Commander of Amvets Post #31 in Ontario. He was also a member of U.A.W. Local #549, Mansfield, where he held many elected offices over the years. He enjoyed helping others and making General Motors a better, safer place to work.
Darryl is survived by his wife of 25 years, Debra Stevens Sargent, whom he married on December 26, 1987; son, Larry (Megan) Sargent of Centerburg; daughter, Angela Ruckman of Mansfield; stepson, Josh Ray (Sara) of Shelby; stepdaughter, Andrea (Brian) Thomas of Lexington; a special grandson, Ashton Ray, who was more like a son; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Tom (Vicki) Sargent of St. Augustine, FL, Gary (Barb) Sargent of Ashland, Doug Sargent of Medina and Jeff (Debi) Sargent of Perrysville; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Sargent; mother, Mildred Sargent; and great friend and coon hunting buddy of 37 years, Andy Ball.
Family and friends may visit from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Gary Lambert officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. In honoring Darryl's wishes, please dress casually for the visitation and service.
