MANSFIELD: Forest William Cotter, age 94 of Mansfield passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014 in his granddaughter's home surrounded by his family.

He was born August 2, 1919 in Richland County to the late Charles W. and Ruth Irene (McKinney) Cotter. On February 14, 1940, Valentine's Day, he married Ruth J. Lohr, who passed away August 2, 1980.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Forest served over two years during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Forest worked for Tappan and Western and Southern Insurance Company. He retired from General Motors as their safety director with over 15 years of service.

He was a member of Ontario United Methodist Church, and the Mansfield Liederkranz. In his early years, Forest enjoyed playing softball and was a great follower of the Cleveland Indians. He also loved fishing and had a talent for woodworking. In more recent years, he looked forward to fine dining with his family.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Linda and Skip Perman of Oregon, Ohio, son and daughter-in-law James and Penny Cotter of Ashland; four grandchildren and their spouses Lana and Tim Bueschen of Munich, Germany, Tonya Perman of Harrison Township, Michigan, Melissa and Jason Henry of Marysville, and Amie and Tim Schilling of Lake Wylie, South Carolina; four great grandchildren Nicholas and Natalie Brunt and Tyler and Claire Schilling. Also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law Harold and Jeanie Cotter, two sisters and a brother-in-law Erma Oswalt and Ruth Ann and Richard Staats all of Mansfield, five nieces and nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews, and seven great great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Richard Oswalt.

Friends may call Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 10-12 pm in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where the funeral service will follow at 12 noon. The Rev. Peg Welch will officiate and burial with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans burial detail will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ontario United Methodist Church.
