Gary L. Harris

ONTARIO: Gary L. Harris, 71, of Ontario, passed away Thursday evening, July 31, 2014 at OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. Born November 10, 1942 in Mansfield, Ohio, he was the son of the late Donna L. (Garber) Solar and Herman E. Harris.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and spent 22 years in the Army Reserves with a special intelligence unit. Gary received his Doctorate Degree in Slavic Languages from The Ohio State University. After graduation, he became a Professor of Slavic Languages and Professor of Computer Science at West Virginia University where he worked from 1971-1987. For a time, he owned a computer store and then became Director of IT at a hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia until his retirement. After he retired, he moved back to Mansfield and developed and maintained several computer store websites with his son. Gary enjoyed assisting family and friends.

He is survived by a son, Marc (Debbie) Harris of Mansfield; Marc and Stephen's mother, Joanne Harris of Mansfield; two grandsons, Zane and Gage Harris; a brother, Phillip (Jody) Harris of Galion; three sisters, Pauline (Arch) Eaton of FL, Kathleen (Neal) Wallace of IL and Nova Mae Harris of St. Louis, MO; several nieces and nephews; two aunts, Delee McNaul and Kathleen Franta; an uncle, Donavan (Martha) Garber; and several cousins, Janet Steele, Marsha (Joe) Marzetti, Marilyn Baker, Dick (Leatha) Franta, Bill Franta, Margie Terkedis, Danny Garber, and Susan Fockler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Lee Harris.

Private family services will be observed. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family.
