Henry McCanne "Hank" Sanford
SAN MARCOS, CA: Hank, 91, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2013 at home with his wife and two sons by his side.
Hank was born and raised in Mansfield, OH on May 3, 1922, by his parents Henry and Irene Sanford. He attended Ohio State University until the outbreak of WWII when he enlisted in the Navy. While preparing to ship out to the South Pacific, he met Martha Kiefer at a dance at the Hotel Del Coronado and, after a four-month courtship, they were married. Two months later, his ship, the USS Pocomoke, went to sea for two years.
After the war, they moved back to Ohio where they had two sons and he began a successful 35-year career as an account executive with 3M. They returned to San Diego County in 1952. In 1977, the couple moved to Lake San Marcos and became actively involved in the United Church of Lake San Marcos and social activities. His community service included driving the disabled and delivering Meals on Wheels. Always ready with a joke and smile, he was known for his great sense of humor, charm and integrity.
Hank was a devoted husband of 69 years to Martha; father to Allen and Kenneth; grandfather to Kelsie, Will, Jack, Ryan and McCanne; and great grandfather to Makenna, Madelynn, Nathaniel and Hannah. He is also survived by his brother Allen Sanford, OH.
At his request, the memorial service will be private.
