MANSFIELD: Ivan L. "Bud" Arter, 85, of Mansfield, died Sunday evening, November 24, 2013 at Winchester Terrace Nursing Home. He was born October 13, 1928, in Ontario, Ohio, the last of ten children of the late William Elroy and Mary Adella (Fisher) Arter.
Bud was an industrial roofer, working for McKinley Roofing and retired from North Central Roofing. He enjoyed woodworking and building, skills that came naturally to him. A gentle man with a big personality, he was a good friend and was always helping others in whatever way was needed. Bud enjoyed his social time with his friends at his various social clubs including: Shelby Masonic Lodge #0350, F. & A.M., American Legion Post #535, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #336, Sons of Herman Lodge #13, V.F.W. Post #7651 and Tall Timber Club in Butler.
Gardening, playing cards with family and friends, fishing, and mushroom hunting filled his free time. Bud enjoyed wildlife and being outdoors in nature. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Bud is survived by two sons, Lynn Arter of Mansfield and Doug (Kim) Arter of Milan; three daughters, Lea Anne (Jesse) Thornton of Mt. Vernon, Regina (Dennis) Kidwell and Alisa Jane (James) Willoby, both of Vero Beach, FL; nineteen grandchildren, Kristy, Jason and Kylee Arter, Kaz, Kasey and Kraig Kidwell, Jonathan and Joshua McGowan, Carrie and Jesse Thornton, Tosha Rupard, Joshuah Young, Brian and Brandon Cushler, Rena, Lindsay and Jenna Arter and Dustin and Darrin Shafer; sixteen great-grandchildren; special friend, Maxine Foster of Mansfield; many nieces and nephews; and several good friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Alice Marie Arter on April 2, 2008; grandson, Brandon Arter; and nine brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Jon Steingass officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to
