James David Higgins

MANSFIELD: James David Higgins, 80, Mansfield, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 while in the care of Mifflin Care Center, following a short illness.

James was born on November 16, 1933 in Mount Vernon to Charles James and Stella (Beckholt) Higgins. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1952. James proudly served his country in the US Navy (1952 -1954) as a fireman. He married (Lela) Marlene Rowley of Mount Vernon on June 15, 1953. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he moved to Mansfield where he worked for Humphreys Manufacturing (1954-1960) and General Motors (1960 until retirement in 1992). James began in Truck (fork lifts and tow trucks) Repair and Retired as 2nd Shift Millwright Supervisor. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing and riding his motorcycle. He was a member of Mansfield American Legion Post 16 and the "Ashland Road McDonalds Breakfast Club."

James is survived by one daughter, Mary Jo (Bob) Stewart of Mansfield; two sons, Chris Eugene (Terri) of Mansfield and Larry Thomas of Mansfield; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; step-brother, Gordon L. Jones of Genoa, Illinois; and his friend and companion, Helen Rumbaugh of Lucas; and nephew Tim Higgins (Mary) of Mount Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; older brother, Robert Louis in 1971; son, James Michael in 2003; and his wife, Marlene in 2005.

Calling hours will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor James Berry of Berean Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Lexington Township Cemetery with full military honors performed by Richland Co. Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
