James "Jim" Herbert Melching

MANSFIELD: Lifelong Mansfield resident James H. Melching celebrated his 89th birthday September 30. Surrounded by family, he was called home on December 17.

He was born in 1924 in Mansfield to John and Nina Melching. On October 26, 1946, he married Marie Holzworth.

Melching has four children, James Melching (Jolene) of Mansfield, Susan Melching-Ryan (David) of Longmont, Colorado, Lindsey Melching of Columbus, and Nina Smith of Longmont, CO. He also has two grandchildren, Jennifer Stiverson (Matt) of Mansfield and Seth Melching of Longmont, CO; and two step grandchildren, Stacie Moore of Mansfield and Jonathan Ryan of Thornton Cleveleys, UK.

He served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his discharge, he was employed in the sales department of Ohio Edison, Kaufmanns and Montgomery Ward. He is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mansfield #35 F&AM, 32 Degree Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Baku Gratto, Ontario VFW, and American Legion.

He is best remembered for his engaging personality, friendly smile, and quick wit. He had a joke for every occasion and a hug for everyone who needed it. He loved fishing, cracking nuts, and playing poker. He was a devoted husband to Marie for 67 years, a loving father, grandfather, and a good friend to many. He will be missed.

Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, December 22, 2013 from 1-5 p.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Rd., Mansfield. A Masonic service will be held at 4:30 p.m.. Funeral services, conducted by Pastor Carol Kilgore and Pastor Richard Beal, will be held Monday, December 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2010 Park Avenue West, Ontario, OH. Military services conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail will be held at the church. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Dr., Ashland, OH 44805 or St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
