James D. O'Keefe

SHELBY: James D. O'Keefe, age 72, resident of Shelby died Tuesday, November 5, 2013 in Hospice House, Ashland, Ohio following an extended illness.

Born August 19, 1941 in Mansfield, Ohio to Lloyd and Grethel (Garrett) Stoops, he lived in the Shelby area for the last 42 years. A graduate of Plymouth High School, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964. Following his military service, Jim worked as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office in Shelby retiring after many years of service.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church. Jim loved shooting, yardwork, antiques, woodworking and attending auctions with his wife.

A quiet individual, he was a caring, proud man who paid attention to detail. He loved being a father and grandfather cherishing the time spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica "Ronnie" O'Keefe, whom he married November 7, 1970; two sons, James David (Amy Lynch) O'Keefe of Tiffin; Matthew (Lisa Adkins) O'Keefe Shelby; his grandchildren, Kassidy O'Keefe, Ryan Lynch, Richard James "R.J." O'Keefe; three brothers, Richard Stoops of Crestline, Wayne (Fran) Stoops of Decatur, AL and Archie (Cheryl) Stoops of Newburg, Maryland; one sister, Susan (Jack) Colvin of Ashland; nieces, nephews; his two cats, Buttons and Boots, and dogs, Buster, Chloe and Snickers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Stoops and his Siberian Husky, Roswell.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Saturday, November 9, 2013 from the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Reverend Russel Yoak will officiate with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Shiloh with military honors provided by the Richland County Joints Veterans Burial Detail. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
