SHELBY: Jay E. Lybarger, age 90, formerly of Shelby, passed away Monday morning, August 5, 2013 at Brookwood Place at Brethren Care Village in Ashland where he had resided since 2005.

Jay was born April 6, 1923 in Shelby, the son of the late Oliver D. and Maude E. (Laser) Lybarger. He was a 1941 graduate of Shelby High School and received an Associate's Degree in Accounting from Ashland College. Jay served his country in the US Army during World War II. During his service time, Jay had the opportunity to attend Mass in Rome at which time, he was touched by Pope Pius XII; a story he relished repeating many times in his lifetime. As a young man he farmed with his dad and then spent a 44 year career as the head accountant for the Shelby Sales Book Company. He was a member of Shelby American Legion and First United Methodist Church in Shelby where he was an usher for over 60 years. He was a recipient of the Jess Rath Christian Service Award recognizing him for his many hours of volunteer service to the community helping the United Way, Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and FISH.

Jay's leisure activities included walking, golfing and visiting and joking with friends and family. He took credit for teaching his daughters, Susan and Amy, and his "adopted daughter", Nancy Cramer how to play golf. He enjoyed watching Ohio State and Shelby Whippet football. Jay also traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Canada, Mexico and most of the United States.

Surviving Jay are his daughters: Susan Lybarger of Shelby and Amy (Gary) Metzger of Ashland, a sister, Doris (George) Williams of Shelby along with many members of the extended Lybarger family.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Marjorie E. (Keck) Lybarger in July of 2010; 3 sisters: Ada Radke, Marguerite Unkel, and Clara Bosko and a brother, Lemuel O. Lybarger.

Friends and family are welcome on Friday, August 9, 2013 from 10 to 11 AM at First United Methodist Church, 18 South Gamble Street, Shelby.
