SHELBY: Joan E. Friebel, age 76, resident of Shelby died Thursday, November 8, 2012 in Hospice House, Ashland, Ohio.
Born February 27, 1936 in Crestline, Ohio to Mathew W. and Frances (Arcudi) Flaherty, she had lived in West Minster, Colorado for 16 years moving back to Shelby in 2006. A 1954 graduate of Crestline High School, she attended Ohio State University and North Central Technical College earning her bachelor's degree in mental health. Joan was employed as a counselor at Serenity Hall in Mansfield, and at Freedom Hall in Crestline Hospital.
She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous where she also was a speaker. During her lifetime, she enjoyed ballroom dancing, reading, sewing and flowers.
Survivors include one son, Shannon (Shelley) Friebel of Shelby; three daughters, Valerie (Rick) Stone and Jodie Gumbert, all of Shelby and Kathleen (Jon) Wiegel of Brighton, Colorado; former husband and best friend, Raphael "Butch" Friebel of Shelby; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; her twin sister, Jean (John) Knapp of Shelby; two sisters, Cathy (Jack) Tooman of Brokensword and Cindy (Greg) Olson of Delaware; two brothers, Dennis (Sharon) Flaherty and Daniel (Marilyn) Flaherty, all of Crestline.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Bob Flaherty and an infant sister, Mary Flaherty.
A celebration of Joan's life will be held 7:00 PM Monday, November 12, 2012 at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Officiating will be Reverend Elena Langstaff, of the Unity Spiritual Enrichment Center in Lexington. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
