GALION: John R. Back, Sr., 86, of Galion, passed away Monday evening, April 23, 2012 at Galion Pointe. Born January 27, 1926, in Mansfield, he was the son of the late Cyrus and Rosetta (Johnson) Back. John served with the Seabees in the U.S. Navy during WWII. John retired from Empire Detroit Steel on January 31, 1989 after 37 years of service. Along with his wife, he pioneered Sunnydale Open Bible Church. He enjoyed playing chess and mowing his lawn. On April 17, 2012, John and his wife, Shirley, celebrated 65 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Morley) Back; four children, Althea S. Parker of Mansfield, John (Sylvia) Back, Jr. of Lucas, Susan (Terry) Teeter of West Alexandria and David B. Back of Louisville, KY; nine grandchildren; five step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; eleven step great grandchildren, ten step great-great grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Vance Hill of Crestline. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Samuel Brian Back; and several brothers and sisters.
A funeral service conducted by Pastor Dreama Caudill will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. Friends and family may visit beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad.
