LEXINGTON: John F. Calhoun, 88, of Lexington passed away Thursday evening June 26, 2014 in Mansfield Memorial Homes surrounded by his loving family.
The son of John and Margaret (Foster) Calhoun, John was born May 21, 1926 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. A World War II Navy veteran, John, a Seaman First Class, was honorably discharged in 1946. On April 10, 1947 he married Eileen Stemmer.
A salesman, John worked for Jewel Companies. In 1984 John and Eileen moved from Pennsylvania to Lexington.
A talented carpenter, John created cedar chests, furniture, as well as toys for his grandchildren. John also enjoyed ham radios. He was playful and had a great sense of humor. He will be remembered as a loving husband, dad and pappy.
He was a member of the Lexington Elks Lodge #2554, Bellville Masonic Lodge #376 and was of the United Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Eileen Calhoun of Lexington; children John Richard Calhoun of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Donald (Mindy) Calhoun of Lexington, and Nancy (Paul) Mowrey of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania; daughter-in-law Carol Calhoun of Shelby; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister Margaret Bennett of New York; brother Robert Calhoun of Connecticut.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son Robert Bruce Calhoun; daughter-in-law Christine Calhoun; sister Virginia Smith, and infant sister Jacqueline Calhoun.
The family will receive friends Sunday, June 29, 2014 from 2-4pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where Elks and Masonic services will begin at 4 pm. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, Monday at 11 am. Chaplain Dan Clouse will officiate and burial with military honors performed by the Bellville American Legion Post #535 will follow in Lexington Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society may be made through the funeral home.
