L.A. Newport, Jr.

MANSFIELD: On November 24, 2013, L.A. Newport, Jr. was called home to be with the Lord. He was born on December 28, 1940 in Pea Ridge, Tennessee to the late L.A. Newport, Sr. and Ruth (Williams) Newport.

After graduating from Ontario High School in 1959, L.A. enlisted in the Army. He served three years with the 3rd Armored Division, 30 months of which was spent in Germany near the Berlin Wall. He was very proud to have served his country! L.A. retired on April 1, 2005 from General Motors Ontario plant after 43 years of service as a millwright. He thought and spoke very highly of the men and women he worked with. L.A. was a member of the U.A.W. Local #549 and a life member of V.F.W. Post #2920 and Amvets Post #26.

In the years after retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his family and caring for the birds and animals around his home. His laughter and the joy he brought to us all will be sorely missed. He was one of a kind!

L.A. was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Diana Jean Newport and a nephew, Archie Barnett.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Whitlatch Newport and his children, Tim (Judy) Newport, Brian (Joyce) Newport and Staci Hamilton. L.A. is also survived by five brothers and five sisters; Bob Williams, Cherri Barnett, Senior (Della) Newport, Fred (Marilyn) Newport, Genny Snyder, Marry (Reed) Lawhun, Al Newport, Roger (Deborah) Newport, Marsha Newport and Patsy Wiseman; two grandchildren, Stephanie Newport and Benjamin Hamilton; a great-granddaughter, Lilly Diane Kerce; four step grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will received friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Monty Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
