Larry Hoptry Obituary
Larry L. Hoptry

LEXINGTON: Larry L. Hoptry, age 76, of Lexington passed away Friday evening, December 28, 2012 in Crestwood Care Center, Shelby following a long battle with Alzheimer's, surrounded by his family.

He was born August 27, 1936 in Ironton, the son of Harold and Lorena (Knox) Hoptry and was raised in Marion, where he was graduated from Harding High School in 1954.

Following high school, Larry served three years in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Alaska. He loved it there so much, he'd hoped to start a life there but as fate would have it, he returned home to marry his sweetheart Nancy Ann Neal. They were wed May 12, 1960 and together celebrated 48 years of marriage before she passed away November 22, 2008.

Moving to Lexington in 1968, Larry worked for 30 years at General Motors Ontario Plant as an electrician.

Upon retirement, Larry and Nancy spent nearly ten years wintering in Homosassa, Florida, where they forged many friendships and enjoyed golfing. At home they also golfed in a couple's league at Pebble Creek Golf Club.

A lover of nature, Larry enjoyed bird hunting and fishing. He spent many days walking the north bank at the Clear Fork Reservoir collecting fishing lures. Larry would refurbish his treasures for the biannual garage sales that he and Nancy would hold.

A talented woodworker he fashioned many birdhouses, and was responsible for creating the wooden soldiers that grace the Lexington town square.

Larry was known as the "neighborhood watch" keeping an eye out for others' property when they were out of town. He was also quick to help keep the sidewalks clean and shoveled around the neighborhood.

Quite the prankster, he loved practical jokes and teasing. Larry delighted most of all in his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law David A. & Amy Hoptry of Springboro, and Stanley N. and Angie Hoptry of Mansfield; and grandchildren Matthew Hoptry and Amy Edwards, Paul Hoptry, Anna Hoptry, Dustin and Sarah Hoptry, Michael and Cassie Hoptry, Andrea Hoptry and Aaron Hoptry; and three sisters and brothers-in-law Loretta and Francis Hall, Markay Ralston all of Marion and Mary and Chuck Rife of Columbus.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a four-year-old sister Margaret Hoptry and a sister Georgia Hartley.

The Hoptry Family will receive friends Wednesday, January 2, 2013 from 1-3 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held at 3 pm. Celebrant Jerry Wilson will officiate. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the .
