ONTARIO: Lawrence W. Perkins, 83, of Ontario, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was born March 21, 1931 in Sparta, Ohio, and graduated from Sparta High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army working in the field of crypto repairs and intelligence. A detailed, perfectionist, he was able to fix anything. He retired from General Motors after 34 years of service where he worked as a tool and die maker. Lawrence was a member of U.A.W. Local #549 and Freedom Years Travelers. Lawrence attended First United Church of Christ in Galion. He enjoyed being outdoors, mowing his lawn and listening to country music. Lawrence enjoyed all sports and avidly followed the OSU Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians, New England Patriots, Duke basketball and Lexington school basketball. His family was his most important priority and he enjoyed spending time with them playing Euchre and a variety of card games.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara Shifley Perkins; three daughters, Sheryl (Brian) Howard of Mansfield, Sue (Jack) Hogan of Wilson, WY, and Kim Perkins of Detroit, MI; a son, Steven L. (Ginny) Perkins of Shelby; a stepdaughter, Debbie (Jack) Carmoney of Port Clinton; three grandchildren, Franz Konczak of San Antonio, TX, Jessica Konczak of Springfield and Steven Glenn (Kayla) Perkins of Shelby; a brother, Clyde (Jeannette) Perkins of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Martha Perkins of Mount Vernon; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that were very dear to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard I. Perkins and Dora Pearl Dye Perkins; his first wife, Barbara Jean Mathias Perkins; and brother, Arthur Carl Perkins.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2014 in the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Ontario, Ohio. The funeral service conducted by Rev. Katherine Beckett will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
