PAOLI, IN: Raymond Alan Barcroft, 64, of Paoli, Indiana passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013 in Hospice of North Central Ohio's Hospice House surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness.
Raymond was born September 28, 1948 in Mansfield, the son of Robert and Marcia (Plumb) Barcroft. He graduated from Madison High School and earned his bachelor's degree in Comprehensive Social Sciences from The Ohio State University.
For over 40 years, Raymond worked as a computer programmer. Most recently contracted by Crane Naval Base in Crane, Indiana.
Although Raymond was gifted with a brilliant mind, he chose humility over arrogance, and remained down to earth and easy going. Raymond never stopped learning. He enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening, attending concerts and drama performances, and even began taking violin lessons.
In 1960, Raymond's vacation out West sparked a lifelong hobby of growing cacti. At one time Raymond had between 2,000 and 3,000 cacti in his house!
From the age of 10, Raymond was intrigued by genealogy and as an adult continued in his passion of researching his family's heritage. A history buff, Raymond studied the Civil War, taking trips to historic battle grounds.
Raymond will be remembered for his brilliance, sense of humor, and quick wit. He always kept family and friends on their heels and laughing.
Raymond was a member of the Ohio Genealogical Association, served as vice president of the Paoli Historical Society, was a member of First Families of Ohio and attended Friends Church in Paoli, Indiana.
