GALION: Dick Reid took a lot of steps in his 99 years. He took the first steps in his education, in marriage, in business and in family, but the first step that Dick so often fondly remembered was taken on October 24, 1936. He was a trombone player in The Ohio State University Marching Band (TBDBITL) and the Buckeyes were hosting Indiana University. That day Dick stepped onto the playing field at Ohio Stadium and marched the looping formations of the very first Script Ohio. He little knew that day how the formation would come to identify OSU Football, the University, and to some extent the entire state. Dick has taken his final steps, and passed away Friday afternoon Nov. 29, 2013 in his Galion home.
Born March. 7, 1914 in Ashland, he was the son of the late Charles and Virgie (Laughbaum) Reid. He was preceded in death on June 28, 1993 by his wife, Maylily (Musselman) Reid whom he married on October 17, 1942.
He was a graduate of Galion High School in 1932 and The Ohio State University in 1937 where he was in the Ohio State Marching Band four years.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Galion and retired from Mansfield Tire and Rubber where he managed the industrial engineering department and previously worked for B.F. Goodrich in Akron and Miami, Oklahoma. Dick was a member of Galion Lodge 414 Free and Accepted Masons in Galion and the Galion Elks Lodge 1191 and enjoyed playing golf, bowling and following the Ohio State University Buckeyes. He played trombone well into his 80's and played in the American Legion Band and the Galion Little German Band.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Nancy Reid of Galion, Thomas and Elaine Reid of Canton and David and Barbara Reid of Carmel, Indiana; one daughter, Susan Reid Cohn of Galion; seven grandchildren, Robert (Karen) Reid, Kristin (Ryan) Reed, Adam Reid, Joshua (Rachel) Reid, Jarrod (Jill) Reid, Maurya (Bill) Wendling and Mallory Cohn; seven great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Marilyn Reid of Canal Fulton and one brother-in-law, Barney Musselman of Galion. He is also survived by his long-time friend and companion, Beverly Wittibschlager and her family.
