Master Gunnery Sergeant (Ret.) Richard Allen Titus

LEXINGTON: Do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason. That simple principle became Richard Titus' life compass as he honorably served his family, his country and his Marine Corps.

MGSgt Richard Titus passed away Wednesday morning July 30, 2014 in OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He was 76.

Born Richard Allen Titus July 11, 1938 in Kane, Pennsylvania to Gregg and Margaret (Miller) Titus, he was graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1956. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps later that year and was stationed at MCAS El Toro, California as a flight engineer on the C130 line, earning E-9 status. In 1970 he transferred to serve as Recruiter for the Mansfield area and retired from the Marine Corps in 1978 to the Fleet Reserve. Richard served three tours of duty in Vietnam, and two tours of duty to Marine Corps Base, Iwakuni, Japan.

In his retirement, Richard served as a supervisor with Newhope.

He was a member and Past Master of Mansfield Lodge #35 and a member of Scottish Rite. An avid fan of The Ohio State University Buckeye football team, Richard served as an inspector to the Lexington High School Marching Band of Gold.

Remembered as a hardworking man who was devoted to his family, country and the Marine Corps, Richard had a devotion to his country, even in his retirement.

He was described as an excellent husband by his wife Barbara, whom he married May 19, 1961; also surviving are their sons Howard (Sonja) Titus of Dayton, Richard (Diane) Titus in North Carolina and Kenneth Titus of Dublin. Richard was Papa to six wonderful grandchildren Sam, Jay, Christopher, Caitlyn, Kenny and Dennis. He has a brother and two sisters living Bill (Kathy) Titus of Jefferson County, PA, Jane (Wayne) Hansen of Minneapolis, MN, and Barb (Ken) Stewart of Punxsutawney, PA; and a sister-in-law Penny Titus also of Punxsutawney.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Robert Titus and Kenneth Titus.

A Masonic memorial service will be held Friday August 1, 2014 at 5 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where the Titus family will receive friends following that service until time for the funeral service at 7:30 p.m. Celebrant Jerry Wilson will lead the funeral service at 7:30 p.m. American Legion Post #535 will provide fitting and necessary military honors for the Master Gunnery Sergeant following the funeral on the grounds of the funeral home. Interment will be in Lexington Cemetery.
