Rev. Robert A. Baker

LEXINGTON: Rev. Robert A. Baker age 85 of Lexington, Ohio and formerly of Spencer, Ohio went home to be with his Lord on Monday, November 18, 2013.

He was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio to Howard and Margaret Adams Baker. Rev. Baker graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1946, Ashland University, Oberlin Graduate School of Theology, and Vanderbilt University. He also attended Ohio Wesleyan University. Prior to his college degrees, he served in the United States Infantry from 1946 to 1948 in Korea.

Rev. Baker was married to Carrie Juanita "Neatty" Parker on August 7, 1949 at the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. The couple was married for 64 years. He served United Methodist Churches in Berkshire (Sunbury Charge) Edison, Boundary, and Denmark (Edison Charge) Spencer, Steubenville, and First Church in Mansfield for 21 of his 42 years of ministry where he was honored as Pastor Emeritus.

He served on several Conference and District Committees. He was past President of the District Council, past President of the EOC Credit Union, past Vice President of the CCFA finance committee of the EOC. Other offices included past President of the Optimist Club of Mansfield, and past Lt. Governor of Ohio Optimist International. He was past Chaplain and member of the Wellington F&AM 127 and a 32nd degree Mason. Rev. Baker taught Spanish for three years at Black River High School and took 8 of the students to Mexico for a month.

He retired in 1990 and moved back to Spencer where he was a teacher of United Methodist Men for 8 years and did substitute work for the EOC. Rev. Baker served on the Conference Retired Board for several years. He enjoyed reading, gardening, challenging games, cruises and traveling to many parts of the world.

Surviving are: Wife, Neatty; four children, Ronald (Linda) Baker of Dublin, Ohio; Claudia (Mark) Bentley of Lexington, Ohio, Charlotte (Michael) Cole of Mansfield, Ohio, Richard (Denise) Baker of Ontario, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Greta Banbury of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Janet (Ernie) Rehling of Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jim Baker; and brother-in-law Stanley Banbury.

Funeral Service will be Friday, November 22, 2013 at 11AM at the Spencer United Methodist Church, 201 East Main Street, Spencer, OH. Rev. Dr. Blake D. Wagner of Mansfield and Rev. Lenore Robinson of Spencer will officiate. Burial will follow at Spencer Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Spencer United Methodist Church 201 East Main Street, Spencer, OH.
