MANSFIELD: Thea "Elaine" Phelps, 83, of Mansfield died Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at MedCentral Mansfield. Born October 29, 1928 in New Straitsville, OH, she was the daughter of Jasper and Ida (Johnson) Mace. Elaine was known as "Smiley" to all her friends and family growing up. She moved to Mansfield and married William "Bill" Phelps on December 22, 1945. A homemaker, Elaine also worked as a cook for The Elms and Isleys Dairy. She was also a member of the College of Regents in the Women of the Moose Lodge #47. Elaine enjoyed Bingo, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and gospel music. She had attended church at the Mansfield Freewill Baptist Church and most recently attended church services at Oak Grove Manor where she and her husband Bill both resided. Elaine loved Oak Grove Manor and considered the residents and staff as her extended family.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, William Phelps; children, Lotta "Dottie" Stone of Hollywood, FL, Pat (Dennis) Harding of Hayesville, Wilma Phelps of Mansfield, Nancy (Michael) Solon of Mansfield, and William Jr. "Buddy" (Brenda) Phelps of Hayesville; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sisters-in-law, Helen Schmidt of Georgia and Jeannie Phelps of Cincinnati; and several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin infant sons, Terry and Perry Phelps and brothers, Samuel "Junior" Mace and Raymond Mace.
Memorial calling will be held Thursday, August 16, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Grace Fellowship Church, 365 Straub Road East, Mansfield. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the church, conducted by Pastor Mark Bailey of Mansfield Freewill Baptist Church.
