MANSFIELD: Vernon Davis, 97, of Mansfield, passed away Thursday August 14, 2014 in Lexington Court Care Center.

The son of Sherman S. and Bessie E. (Evans) Davis, Vernon was born July 22, 1917 in Vaughnsville. His childhood was spent in Beaverdam, and in 1932 Vernon moved to Lorain to live with his aunt and uncle. Vernon graduated from Lorain High School in 1935 and that summer moved to Mansfield.

Two years later on June 3, 1937 he married Cleeta Wirick.

A WWII veteran, Vernon served in the Pacific Theater with the 6th Combat Engineers and was a life member of the American Legion Post #16.

Vernon worked for Westinghouse as a lab technician and after 40 years retired in 1976.

Beginning in 1947 he was a faithful and active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where he served on council and was a Sunday School teacher. In 2004 Vernon also wrote the 100th anniversary history of the church.

Vernon was a mason and member of the Venus Lodge #152. He received his 32nd degree Scottish Rite, in the Valley of Columbus, and was a past president of the Richland County Scottish Rite. A life member of the Baku Grotto, Vernon served as secretary for seven years and was Dr. of Smiles for 12 years.

Vernon has always been an avid gardener and was a life member of the Mansfield Men's Garden Club and the American Horticulture Society.

He served as past president of the High 12 Club in Mansfield and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Louie B. Nunn in 1971. He was also a member of the Local AARP Chapter #718 where he served as a tax consultant for 12 years, was a member of the Richland County Historical Society, past president of the Westinghouse Square Club, past president of the Mansfield Parks Commission and served on various other boards.

Vernon enjoyed teaching children and volunteered for 19 years as a tutor in the Hosts Program through Hedges School.

He is survived by two sons Dennis N. (Polly) Davis of Mansfield, and Jefffrey A. (Barbara) Davis of Perrysville; grandchildren Sarah (Brett) Spearing of Frankfort, IL., Matthew (Sarah) Davis of Lakeland, FL., Elizabeth (Stephen) Olson of Bexley, and Benjamin (Margaret) Davis of Cincinnati; great grandchildren Lawson and Skye Spearing, Sebastian Morrison-Davis, Julia and William Olson, and Wes Davis.

Along with his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his wife Cleeta Davis in 2008 and brother Paul Davis.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 20, 2014 from 12-1 pm in St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 426 Sherman Place, Mansfield where his memorial service will follow at 1 pm. The Rev. Carl Cunfer will officiate.
