William "Bill" Phelps

MANSFIELD: William "Bill" Phelps, went to be with the Lord, Friday, June 20, 2014.

He resided at Oak Grove Manor. Born in Ashland, OH on April 7, 1925 to Ray Phelps and Lotta Harmon. Bill graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1943 and went on to serve until the end of World War II with the Civil Air Patrol since he was not able to serve in the Army due to medical reasons. He held various jobs over the years including driving truck for Central Fruit Company, working as a tool and die maker for Tappan for 45 years, and driving bus #8 for Madison School District. Bill also was a professor of mathematics and robotics at NCSC, professor of mathematics at OSU, fire chief of Mifflin Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. for 14 years and an Ohio State Arson Inspector. He held the Pilgrim Degree in Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #341 and was a member of Venus Lodge 152 and High 12 Club. Bill was an avid OSU fan.

He is survived by his sister, Helen Schmidt of Georgia; daughters, Lotta "Dottie" (Ed) Stone of Summerville, SC, Patricia (Dennis) Harding, Wilma Phelps, and Nancy (Mike) Solon, all of Mansfield; son, William "Buddy" (Brenda) Phelps of Hayesville; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thea Ellen Mace on August 14, 2012, whom he married December 22, 1945; sons, Terry and Perry Phelps; sister, Betty Godbey; and brother and sister-in-law, Perry and Jeanne Phelps.

The family would like to send out a very special thank you to the wonderful staff at Oak Grove Manor who were like family and their love and support in the care of their mom and dad. Also a thank you to Southern Care Hospice for the care of their father.

Memorial services will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Diamond St. Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, conducted by Pastor Mark Bailey of Freewill Baptist Church. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
