Alan John Airoldi Obituary
Alan John Airoldi Mar 6, 1937 ~ Dec 15, 2013 A native Californian and San Franciscan, and proud of his Swiss ancestry, Al was born on March 6, 1937 to Arnold Joseph Airoldi and Claudine Kathryn Airoldi, from whom he learned the values he carried with him throughout his life. Al was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Donald Airoldi. Al attended Balboa High School in San Francisco, was graduated in 1954, and entered the University of California, Berkeley, receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1958. He continued his formal education at UC Berkeley with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in 1960. He joined Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and stayed very active in the NU Chapter of the Alumni Association, which elected him "Alumnus of the Year" in 1978. Standard Oil was Al's first employer. Thereafter he worked for Wells Fargo Leasing Corporation as Vice President, retiring in the early nineties, and then created his own partnership, LMS Associates. Al served his country by joining the Coast Guard, and in 1969 attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Coast Guard Reserve. Al and Kathleen Karen Dole were married in 1980 and made their home in Corte Madera. Together they shared a passion for skiing, gardening, and traveling, scheduling yearly excursions into the far corners of the world. Al also was an exceptional chef, tirelessly bringing together his large circle of friends to enjoy his hospitality. Al continued to be deeply involved in his community. He was elected to the City Council where he served from 1985 to 1997, and was chosen Mayor for three terms, during one of which the City of Corte Madera celebrated its 75th Anniversary. Al possessed a quick wit, a lust for learning, and a keen understanding of the human condition. When he set himself a goal, he brought it to conclusion with fierce determination. He was a loving, caring husband, and loyal friend. He will always be remembered for his strength, warmth, sense of humor and spirited personality. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, and several cousins. Services will be held on Friday, December 27, 12 noon at Ashley & McMullen Mortuary, 4200 Geary Blvd. at 6th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94118, Tel: 415-751-8403. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Mission Road, Colma, CA. A Celebration of Life is being planned for late January 2014. A man's life may be judged by the void he leaves behind. Al's is large and he will be greatly missed.
