Charles Raymond Thurber Was born on Christmas Day 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri to James Herbert Thurber and Helen Louise Coad. "Ray" was the third of five siblings, including older sister Helen, brother John, and younger sisters Patricia and Beauton. At age 22 Charles (now "Charlie") entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served proudly in Korea. After leaving active service he attended Washington University in St. Louis, graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 1953. In 1953 Charlie married Patricia Ann Gerber also from St. Louis. They were blessed with three daughters and two sons, sharing 46 years together until her death in 1999. Charlie worked for over twenty years with Better Business Bureaus (BBB) in St. Louis, Mobile, AL, San Francisco, CA and West Palm Beach, FL. Later in his career he also worked as Association Manager for state and local medical societies in California and Florida. He served on state and national BBB boards, and was active in The United Way, Rotary Club and the American Society of Association Executives. Charlie was also an active member of the many Catholic churches he attended throughout his life, and served on numerous church boards. He last attended Our Lady of Fatima in Modesto and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. In addition to family, Charlie devoted many of his non-working hours to fishing. It was a lifelong passion and his life in pictures shows that the big ones did not get away. He had many great tales to share with all. Charles was predeceased by his first wife Patricia, his second wife Dorothy (Varni), his sister Helen (Argent) and brother John. He leaves behind his present wife Dorothy Walsh Thurber; sisters Patricia (Ruckman), St. Louis, MO, Beauton (Welton), St. Louis, MO; daughters Kathleen Nihart (Gary), Bella Vista, CA, Victoria Holdridge, San Rafael, CA, Penny Zambrano (Michael) Burbank, CA; sons Charles Jr (Andrea), Atherton, CA, and Mark, West Palm Beach, FL, along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic church, Modesto, CA, with a reception immediately following in the Church Hall.
