Frederick Runkel Burrell M.D. Obituary
Frederick Runkel Burrell, M.D.
July 12, 1930 ~ August 9, 2014
Resident of Carmichael
Formerly of Tiburon
Bare biographical bones can never capture a man nor, in this case, his passion for banjos, opera and bluegrass, bow ties, ice cream, duck hunting, fly fishing and terrible puns. The son of H. Cayford and Mary Burrell, Fritz Burrell was born in Madison, Wisconsin in the summer of 1930, and the tales from his childhood, spent in the jungles of Venezuela, the outback of Australia and the bucolic farmlands of the Midwest, have become family lore.
In 1952, Fritz graduated from Harvard University, where he was a member of the Hasty Pudding Club. He served in the U.S. Air Force, before receiving his medical degree in 1958 from the Baylor College of Medicine. He spent the next four decades as a urologist at Ross Valley Medical Clinic and Marin General Hospital, and then Sacramento's The Med Clinic and Mercy General Hospital, before retiring in 2006.
Colleagues and friends will remember his distinguished career and his love of jazz and history. But to those closest to him — his wife Nancy McLin Burrell, sister Pat Burrell Vogel, children Cayford Burrell, Marika Burrell Wright, Caroline Burrell Griffin, Andrew Burrell and Christopher Burrell, step-children Lisa McLin Lechner and Sean McLin, and 19 grandchildren — Fritz will always be the beloved family man, remembered for his infectious laugh, broad grin and big heart.
Fritz was predeceased by his first wife Corinne Alberg Burrell, his second wife Suzanne Yavorsky Burrell and daughter Anna.
A funeral mass and memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 22 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 5751 Locust Ave. in Carmichael. If you wish to make a donation, Fritz would have wanted you to donate to the , love your families — and wear a bow tie.
