Obituary Condolences

Galen Herschel Williams, Jr. 1932-2014 "Come fill the Cup, and in the Fire of Spring Your Winter-garment of Repentance fling; The Bird of Time has but a little way To flutter and the Bird is on the Wing."- Omar Khayyam Galen Herschel Williams, a longtime resident of Mill Valley, and an admirer of Persian poet Omar Khayyam, died in his sleep January 24 from the complications of Parkinson's disease. Survivors include Joanne Williams, his wife of 55 years; son Stuart and daughter-in-law Kirsten; grandchildren Aidan and Genevieve Williams, all of Oakland; sister Joe Anne Williams of Trail, Oregon; brother John Williams of Livermore and several nieces and nephews. "Hersch" as he was known, was born in Wilson, N.C., and lived his early life in the South. An MBA graduate of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, Galen and Joanne moved to Mill Valley in 1963 and established deep roots in the community. His career trajectory included stints at the Federal Reserve Bank and Wells Fargo in San Francisco. In 1970 he established a solo accounting practice in an office that overlooked Lytton Square, where he could observe the comings and goings in Mill Valley for 40 years. An avid tennis player, skier, hiker and mountain biker, in his active years he liked nothing better than to run the trails on Mt. Tam with two like-minded pals and to backpack with his son, Stuart. Galen served on several community boards, including the Redwoods Retirement Community where he had lived for the past two years. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather - a family man to the end.
